What is cranberry juice detox?
Cranberry juice contains a lot of nutrients. As a matter of fact, cranberries have more antioxidant content than many other fruits and vegetables, including red grapes, strawberries, spinach, and broccoli. Moreover, a cup of cranberry juice contains vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin B3, vitamin B6, vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin K, copper, potassium, calcium, iron, folate, magnesium, zinc, phosphorus, selenium, fiber, protein, fat, and carbs (30.9 g per cup).
It is no wonder why alternative doctors and naturopaths recommend drinking cranberry juice to detox. Doing a cranberry juice detox once in a while cleanses the body of toxins that may come from the environment, the food that we eat, or other toxic influences. The cranberry juice detox is a combination of cranberry juice and water. This mix is reported to flush the lymphatic system, kidneys, intestines, and other organs of toxins. It is believed that results can be seen in as little as a week.
How Does Cranberry Juice Detox Work?
It is safe for most people to include cranberry juice on their diets. The cranberry detox juice diet is also very simple and easy to follow. There really is no time frame, but it is believed that doing this for two to three weeks will yield the best results.
Cranberry Detox Water
Create your own cranberry detox water by infusing 1/2 cup of fresh crushed cranberries in an 8-ounce of purified water. Infusing the water with the juice coming from the crushed cranberries will make the body absorb the nutrients faster. This is a great way to get pure cranberry juice that is not sweetened and does not have any preservatives added to it.
Directions: Release the juice from the cranberries by crushing them. Put them in a glass, then fill with water. Let it sit 30 minutes before drinking.
You can drink this detox water daily to keep you hydrated and healthy. It is suggested that you drink this 30 minutes before each meal for best results.
Maximize the result of your detox by avoiding all processed foods, meat, dairy, and other animal products. Instead, eat fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes, seeds, and gluten-free whole grains like brown rice and quinoa.
Of course, you may also buy cranberry juice from the store. However, when looking for healthy cranberry juice, look for the one that is organic or the one that says “made with 100 percent real juice.” You may also opt for the one which has natural sweeteners like apple or grape juice. Stay away from cranberry juice cocktail or cranberry drink, because it only has a small amount of actual cranberry juice. It contains added sugars like high fructose corn syrup, which is not good for you.
Here are also some cranberry detox water recipes that you can try using cranberry juice combined with other healthy ingredients:
1. Combine 2 tablespoons of cranberry juice concentrate, 1 lemon (sliced), a dash of cinnamon, and 1 teaspoon of raw honey in 40-ounce water. You will have detox water that’s good for the whole day.
2. Prepare 1 and a half cups of water, 3/4 cup of cranberry juice, 6 tablespoons apple cider vinegar, 3 teaspoon lemon or lime juice. Combine all the ingredients and enjoy this mix all throughout the day.
One Week Cranberry Juice Detox Program
Before you start your one-week detox program, make sure that you pick a week in your calendar wherein you won’t have to do anything mentally or physically taxing. Get a clean 64-ounce container. Then add 8 to 12 oz. of organic unsweetened cranberry juice. Then, fill the rest of your container with filtered water.
Day 1 – Drink your cranberry juice detox by splitting the quantity across mealtimes. Refrain from eating anything. Do not drink more than 64 ounces of your mix so as not to stress your kidneys.
Day 2 – Make a new and fresh mixture of your cranberry juice detox. Repeat the process from day one by drinking the mixture during mealtimes.
Day 3 – You can start eating breakfast again, but you have to drink 4 to 6 ounces of your detox mix an hour before your meal. Choose organic fruits and whole grains. For lunch and dinner, continue drinking your cranberry juice detox.
Day 4 – You can already eat food during breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Make sure that you drink your detox mix before each meal. Wait for 30 minutes or an hour before eating anything. Stay away from processed foods containing a lot of preservatives, sugar, or salt. You should also completely avoid meat. Instead, go for whole grains, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and beans.
Day 5, 6, and 7 – For the remaining days of the week, follow your routine from day 4.
If you like, you may continue with the day 4 diet for another week or two.
Drinking cranberry juice has been shown to have a lot of health benefits. Some of which include: improved heart health, improved digestive health, protection against cancer, prevention against UTI’s, and protection for liver. For this article, we will focus on the health benefits of cranberry juice on UTI and the liver.
1.Prevent Urinary Tract Infections
Cranberries contain the plant compound called proanthocyanidins. This compound help prevents UTI’s by stopping the bacteria from attaching themselves to the urinary tract walls.
According to a 2008 study from Worcester Polytechnic Institute featured in Science Daily, cranberry juice helped prevent urinary tract infections.
In a 2016 study reported in the Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine, uncircumcised boys who previously had repeated UTIs had less bacterial infections in their urine cultures after drinking cranberry juice. The research suggests that cranberry juice prevents the growth of bacterial pathogens.
Another study in 2017 featured in Frontiers in Microbiology reported that the cranberry juice was able to lower the incidence of UTI’s in mice. This result is mainly attributed to the antibacterial properties of the juice, which have reduced the E. coli bacteria in the bladder.
2. Protects the Liver
Cranberry juice is actually a good source of vitamin C or ascorbic acid. A cup of unsweetened cranberry juice contains 23.5 mg of vitamin C. This is 31 % of the recommended daily intake for women (75 mg) and 26 % of the recommended daily intake for men (90 mg).
Vitamin C helps the liver by thinning and decongesting the bile, allowing the liver to metabolize fats much more efficiently. This is especially great for people with a lot of fat in the liver.
The vitamin C present in cranberry juice will also boost the production of glutathione,a substance naturally produced by the liver but it is also found in vegetables, fruits, and meats.
Glutathione is a substance naturally produced by the liver but is also found in vegetables, fruits, and meats. It is a powerful antioxidant that fights against oxidative stress, which may, in turn, reduce disease. The vitamin C present in cranberry juice will boost the production of glutathione and the whole detoxification process of the liver. Moreover, potent antioxidants present in cranberry juice protects the liver from cell damage caused by free radicals. These antioxidants also help remove heavy metals or drugs that may be toxic for the liver.
